Garden Annex
Case Study - Staithe Court, Beccles
Caring for elderly or unwell relatives is something many of us will have to undertake in the future. We are all living longer and many older people need some form of care, yet still wish to maintain their independence for as long as is possible. Once care is required the usual options are to either move into sheltered accommodation, or move into a nursing home. This can be a very expensive solution and we have seen a recent shift towards the idea of garden annexes and self-contained extensions.
We were approached by our client to design some form of accessible accommodation by extending their current property. After looking at all the options available to us we designed a garden annex offering completely independent living, but with the reassurance of having relatives next door if required. Working amongst tight constraints within the rear garden we were able to provide 39m2 of accessible living accommodation, designed with ease of movement in mind. The building offers high levels of insulation and has been designed with low running costs and sustainability at the fore. The building was submitted for planning as a dual purpose building for use as either residential accommodation or as a holiday let.
